A new article published in Gynecology, Obstetrics, Fertility & Senology reported that genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) is characterized by multiple signs including vaginal dryness, burning sensation, and itching discomfort, besides deterioration of sexual health, dysuria, urgenturia and repeated urinary infections. GSM can cause significant impairment of quality of life in symptomatic postmenopausal women. The authors discussed that systemic or local hormonal treatments are frequently given along with non-hormonal treatments in the management of GSM. Owing to contraindications to hormonal treatments and constraints on the use of local treatments, other therapeutic options were proposed. This article stated that CO2 laser is now part of therapeutic options for vaginal dryness due to GSM. There is a growing interest in this technique, in particular, for women who have a contraindication to hormonal therapy, as it is a globally effective, long-acting alternative with few adverse effects. This intervention could provide a quality of life benefit to many patients with minimal side effects if used in accordance with the indications and implementation protocols. In conclusion, it was stated that clinical data based on high-level therapeutic trials is necessary for the validation of this treatment and its recommendation by health professionals.
